Upcoming Events and Fundraising Update

We will be having a food stand again at the Rutabaga Festival this year, which was a lot of fun to help with last year.  Keep it in mind, families, for getting in your fundraising volunteer time.

Memorial Day weekend, Labor Day weekend, and the weekend of Art In the Park in June are also important times when we have the Brat Stand.

Great times to volunteer for working…

Also in June, the weekend of the 8th and 9th, we are planning a Softball Tournament at the Barronett Civic Center.  We will be serving food both days, with Live Music on Saturday the 9th.  We will be releasing more information about it as we get closer to the date of the event.

We are still taking recipes for the Cookbook Fundraiser.  So anybody out there who may have hesitated to submit your recipes before because of the busy Holiday Season, please do so now!!  The book is shaping up nicely, and will make a great gift!  Any and all recipes will be welcomed.  Again, please contact Mary Beth Gunderson at 822-8886, or by email at vmgundy@chibardun.net , with your recipe.

Our Calendar Raffle was very successful, with two more months of drawings still yet to be held.  We had a tie for the two top sellers, who were Suzy Lehmann and Chad/Kim Anderson.  Our second place seller was Corey Graf and our third place seller was Pam DeSantis.  Congratulations!  They all did a great job!

The Pizza Sales (Club’s Choice frozen foods) also wrapped up, with a disappointing low turn-out of sellers.  A big Thank You to those of you who did sell, with Congratulations going to Adam Hornstein, our Top Seller, with 177 items sold!!  Great Job!

Cumberland Hockey is proud to have your support!  Here’s a word from one of our valuable supporters, Sharon Haugerud…

Dear Hockey Families:

As our hockey season comes to an end, I would like to say “Thank you” to each of the hockey players for their hard work, dedication to the sport, and for the opportunity to watch their exciting and competitive

games. The joy of watching children and young adults truly enjoy themselves while improving on their skills and mastering the game of hockey is priceless. Also, ”Thank you” to all the coaches for volunteering hundreds of hours of their time to teach our players not only the game of hockey, but more importantly, the life long benefits of team work and sportsmanship. And lastly, “Thank you” to all of the parents for supporting your children in their desire to participate in youth hockey. No one can place a monetary value on the enjoyment our children experience while participating in hockey, nor the fond memories they will take with them forever.

We can and do, however, know the monetary cost of providing the opportunity to participate in a youth hockey program. As members, most of you have been instrumental in the construction of our beautiful arena and know the costs incurred. Although its real property worth is approximately $1,000,000; we as an association, owe $438,000 on a bond held by two local banks, secured by a few extremely dedicated hockey families. Besides the annual principle and interest payment of $45,000; total operating expenses for the year run an average of $110,000 making the total amount needed to break even, $155,000 per year. With an enrollment of 100 hockey players, the cost per player for the opportunity to participate is $1550 per year, far less than the registration fee charged to participate.

Granted, other community members utilize our facility, but do so, also at a cost. The City of Cumberland buys ice time to allow community members to take advantage of our wonderful facility, as does the Northwoods Figure Skating Club and the Cumberland School district. Last season, the monies collected from ice time sold, along with registration fees, tournament profits, concessions, and fundraisers totaled $122,000. This left a budgetary shortfall of $32,000. Unfortunately, the financial statement for this program year is projected to be almost identical to last.

Having had three children actively involved in a variety of recreational activities, two of which were in hockey throughout their school years, I know first hand the time involved in committing to fund raising activities. But in keeping with the association’s commitment to minimizing registration costs, fund raising is the only viable alternative. If each family would have minimally participated in each fund raiser as requested by the fund raising committee, we would have realized a substantial profit for the year rather than struggle with a deficit. Thankfully, several families put forth an outstanding effort in their fund raising achievement avoiding an even greater deficit.

Those of you who I have had the privilege of working with, know how much I love the game of

hockey and my commitment to our youth hockey program. But, if we as parents can not all work together for the benefit of our children, I fear that the opportunity for our children to participate in a local community hockey program is in jeopardy.

I am respectfully asking that each family commit to at least the minimal fund raising requests in an effort to balance the budget; recruit new members to expand our hockey program; tell others about the many positive attributes of watching your child play hockey and why keeping hockey in Cumberland is important; communicate with me (822-4023) what you feel needs to be changed or problems you have experienced, along with suggestions for correcting the problem; and share any innovative ideas on fund raising that we, in the past, may have overlooked.

The future of a successful Cumberland Youth Hockey Program can only be realized if all of us want it to be.

I look forward to your continued support.

Sincerely,

Sharon Haugerud, Past and Present Board Member, Coach, and Proud Parent.

Thank you, Sharon, for sharing your knowledge of our hockey program and your dedication.

It’s greatly appreciated!!
